"Every day is a battle, part of the war for a life curated by ourselves."

Yes, that is me quoting myself. Today’s post is inspired by my reflection on that quote; it is the tool I am using to distance myself from the habits that pull me away from the life I want to live.

At its core, viewing life as a battle is a framing mechanism. It shifts the individual from a passive observer to an active protagonist. This "war" is often internal—a struggle for cognitive autonomy against external systems (algorithms, advertisements, and dopamine loops) designed to bypass our conscious will.

The idea of framing our lives as a constant struggle may lend us to miss out on the beauty of life. By viewing our lives in a combative lens you are more likely to be reactive and potentially see enemies and "traps" where there aren't any.

Historical Perspective

The idea that "struggle" is the natural state of existence has deep roots:

  • Ancient Philosophy: The Greek philosopher Heraclitus famously claimed that "War is the father of all things," suggesting that conflict and tension are what drive change and growth.

  • The Biological Lens: In the 19th century, Charles Darwin popularized the "Struggle for Existence." While he often used it metaphorically, it cemented the idea that life is a competitive arena where it's the "survival of the fittest".

  • Stoicism: Modern "warrior" mindsets often borrow from Stoicism (Marcus Aurelius), which views the mind as a "citadel" that must be defended against the "sieges" of destructive emotions and external distractions.

Reality in a World of Distractions

In a world filled with endless Youtube Shorts, Instagram Reels, Pornographic videos and Smut stories, there has never been a greater assault on the human spirit.

Is it an exaggeration to view life as combative if the second you wake up your phone gives access to multibillion dollar operations to suck the cash out of your account into theirs and convert your attention into advertisement revenue?

Everywhere you look, processed food is being advertised as "value meals", tempting to sacrifice quality for the reward of keeping more money. Sacrificing your long-term health for short-term savings. Social media influencers offer their "authentic" solutions by speaking towards our insecurities.

The Psychology of the Warrior in the Garden

I don't know if it's healthy to think this way. I do find it useful though. It may be because I hate the idea of my autonomy being taken away and the anger and resentment that brings, gives me the strength to resist these temptations.

But there is a trade-off:

I don't believe we were placed on this Earth merely to survive. While the "war" is real in an internal sense, the ultimate goal of any war is peace.

To sustain your spirit, consider shifting the metaphor: you are not just a soldier on a battlefield, but a warrior tending a walled garden. You must still defend the walls—that is the "battle"—but the purpose of those walls is to allow the life you desire to grow inside, undisturbed and without fear.

Stay golden,
